Book Review Points to Danger in Quoting the Bible

MEDIA ADVISORY, July 20 /Christian Newswire/ -- Professor Donald Mitchell, one of the top 10 reviewers on Amazon, recently wrote a review of "Behind the Hedge, A novel" which was written by Waneta Dawn, and won double awards in the 2008 Christian Choice Book Awards. He gave the novel five stars and entitled his review "Quoting the Bible to Justify Spousal Abuse."

Mitchell says it as he sees it and directs the reader to John 8:44 "You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies," referring to the extra challenge Christians face in dealing with "husbands who misinterpret the Bible to give them complete and inconsiderate authority over their wives and children."

"Many spouses use words, threats, emotional distress, economic constraints, and isolation to reduce their partners to near slave-like submission," says Professor Mitchell. Behind the Hedge "helps demonstrate that solutions can be difficult," and that "being more and more submissive doesn't create a solution, but rather encourages more abuse."

"Abuse harms everyone who is touched by it," Mr. Mitchell states, "Waneta Dawn writes well about her subject. You'll feel the family's pain, and you'll be revolted by what you read." Mitchell recommends the book as a helpful gift.

Professor Donald Mitchell just finished coauthoring "Witnessing Made Easy," about ways that all Christians can bring the Good News of Jesus Christ to more people. His book has not been released yet. Mr. Mitchell became interested in "Behind the Hedge" as a way to combat society's contempt for Christianity--especially the disdain that was brought about by the authoritarian view of the submission teaching, and the resulting domestic abuse. He hopes addressing this issue will help make Christian homes places of love and warmth that will draw people to Christ, rather than repelling them.
