MARYKNOLL, N.Y., Nov. 5, 2012 /Christian Newswire/ -- The centennial celebration of the Maryknoll Sisters' Congregation and its dedication to mission around the world is the theme for the November-December issues of "Maryknoll" magazine and the Spanish-language "Revista Maryknoll." Both magazines are published by the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers, the foreign mission society of the Roman Catholic Church in the United States. Current and recently published issues of both Maryknoll magazines can be viewed online (maryknollsociety.org/index.php/magazines).

An article written by Sister Janice McLaughlin, president of the Maryknoll Congregation, provides a general overview of the mission of the Maryknoll Sisters during 100 years of service throughout the world. In "The Future Beckons," Sister Janice explains that the Maryknoll Congregation looks to the past for inspiration and follows the star of their mission vocation in an ever-changing world.

As the Maryknoll Congregation comes to the close of its centennial commemoration, both magazines feature a variety of articles about Maryknoll Sisters from yesterday and today. These include the story about four young women from three nations (Tanzania, El Salvador and Kenya) who recently completed final vows to make a lifelong commitment of service to the Maryknoll Congregation. Then, there is the story about Maryknoll Sister Rose Marie Cecchini from Stockton, California, who has helped Navajo Native Americans in Gallup, New Mexico, protect their land against unsafe uranium mining. A third article by the president of Catholic Relief Services pays tribute to the Maryknoll Sisters who educated her in grade school in Hong Kong.

In "Maryknoll" magazine exclusively, readers will learn that the students from Mother Teresa Regional Catholic High School (formerly Mother of Divine Providence Catholic School) in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, recently welcomed Maryknoll Father Robert Jalbert and expanded their mission vision through the "Maryknoll Magazine Classroom Program." This program provides the magazine and corresponding lesson plans to 215,000 students in almost 4,000 classrooms across the U.S.

In "Revista Maryknoll" only, readers meet a religion teacher at Maria Reina Academy for girls in San Juan, Puerto Rico, who uses this magazine to incorporate Maryknoll’s Explore Mission program that helps Hispanics understand the call of all Catholics to mission.

The Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers follow Jesus in serving the poor and others in need in 28 countries that include the U.S. All Catholics are called to mission through baptism and confirmation, and Maryknoll's mission education outreach in parishes and schools throughout the country engages U.S. Catholics in mission through vocations, prayer, donations and as volunteers. Maryknoll missioners share God's love and the Gospel in combating poverty, providing healthcare, building communities and promoting human rights.
