Another Abuse Story in the Headlines Is Sad Reminder that Abuse Happens and Survivors Need Help

ATLANTA, July 20, 2011 /Christian Newswire/ -- A news story this week stated that a private school in California was shut down after the principle allegedly molested students for years. A staffer knew about the situation but did nothing. The story serves as another sad reminder that abuse happens, and often happens at the hands of people we trust.

"We hear a lot about sexual abuse today and we often seem to have the idea that there are men lurking in dark corners. That's really not quite the true picture," says veteran author and abuse survivor Cecil Murphey. "What we don't get is that most of the perpetrators are people we should have been able to trust. In fact, we did trust them and that was our problem: teachers, pastors, neighbors, relatives, an older brother, a parent. And not just men--women abuse boys as well.

"Another thing many don't realize is that there are lasting emotional effects that cause the abused child problems long into their adulthood. That's why I wrote my book, started a blog, and offer seminars. I want to help those who struggle with the same things I did."

Murphey will speak at the When Someone You Love Was Abused seminar in Grand Haven, Michigan, on Saturday, July 23. It's the first in a series of upcoming national conferences, and this first one has free admission. Additional speakers include fellow authors and abuse survivors Pastor Dawn Scott Jones, Shelly Beach, and Wanda Sanchez. There will be sessions for survivors and loved ones of survivors. A $1.99 Kindle offer for Murphey's book "When a Man You Love Was Abused" (Kregel) is now available at Amazon through July 27. The book recently won the Foreword Book of the Year Bronze Award in the Family and Relationships category.

To offer help for hurting men, Murphey created a blog for male survivors. Visit www.menshatteringthesilence.blogspot.com.
