Children's author Kathryn Dahlstrom offers plenty of action in "Children of Angels", the first book in the New Nephilim series for 9-to-14-year-old readers. "I put as much fun as possible in this story," she says. "Lots of humor, lots of exciting action."
The fantasy series is based on the biblical mention of Nephilim in Genesis 6 and Numbers 13. When angels came to earth and took women as their wives, their children grew up to be Nephilim -- "Heroes of old, men of renown." Dahlstrom explains, "For me that was a fantasy up for grabs! I wondered what if the genes of the Nephilim resurfaced today in a kid? What if he could suddenly do everything an angel could do?"
She isn't worried about fictionalizing a biblical reference. "Today's Christian parents know good make-believe when they see it," she says. Thirteen-year-old Jeremy fights dark spiritual forces in all-out warfare using heaven-wrought weaponry. It reads like medieval sword fighting -- sometimes taking place in mid-air, since the combatants have wings. However, Dahlstrom is aware that glorifying the occult can be a real danger with children's fantasy. "Children of Angels does the opposite," she says. "The fundamental truth in the story is that God is real, heaven exists, and Jesus Christ is Who He said He was: the Son of the Most High God."
The author has also written six titles in the Good News Club children's fiction series published by Child Evangelism Fellowship Press. Two of her screenplays have been optioned by film companies. Kathryn Dahlstrom and her husband, Tim, live in Minnesota.
