Tomeo ponders sobering report on 'America's State of Mind'

Christian Newswire/ -- Researches have discovered that the use of prescription medications for mental health conditions is alarmingly high in America – especially among women.
Medco Health Solutions, Inc., a company that manages pharmacy benefits for health insurers, recently released "America's State of Mind" – a report on research it conducted by analyzing claims for 2.5 million Americans from 2001-2010. Medco found that one in four women ages 20 and older got prescriptions during the past decade for a mental health condition; they joined 15 percent of men.
"The 'America's State of Mind' looked at drug-use trends over the past 10 years," said bestselling author and syndicated radio host Teresa Tomeo, "and found that women actually lead the way in terms of drug prescriptions related to mental health conditions. But the big question remains, why? What is happening in our world that is causing so many, especially women, to turn to drugs to help them get through life?
"One Medco psychiatrist explained that women may be bearing the brunt of a decade that started with 'the horror of 9/11, combined with stress and concerns over wars and economic turmoil that followed,'" Tomeo added. "While we are blessed to know more about mental health issues and to have additional ways to treat what can be debilitating conditions, it's also important to dig deeper and get at the root of the problems – to find out why there are so many people hurting at some level."
