NEW YORK, May 22, 2013 /Christian Newswire/ -- The Pontifical Mission Societies have extended the deadline for their first-ever song contest for young Catholics to June 14, 2013.  By that date, all entries must be uploaded to a special contest website -- www.propfaith.net/SongContest2013

Contestants are asked to create original songs (lyrics and music), in either English or Spanish, with content drawn from, but not limited to both the themes of the Year of Faith and World Youth Day.  Two divisions are featured: Adolescent (grades 9-12) and Young Adult (ages 18-29).  The official entry form, with contest rules, may be downloaded from our dedicated web page for youth and young adults -- www.onefamilyinmission.org/society-propfaith/youth-in-mission.html.

The judges for the contest are contemporary Catholic music-artists:  Tom Booth, recently invited to sing at Pope Francis' International Confirmation Liturgy, Pedro Rubalcava, and Kate Cuddy.  One grand-prize winner will be chosen in each division (Adolescent, Young Adult). Each will have his / her song recorded by a professional Catholic music recording artist; both songs will be used as part of the participation of the Pontifical Mission Societies in World Youth Day 2013 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

There will be two honorable mentions named as well in each category.  All winners will be announced in August, and an awards ceremony will take place this October -- "Mission Month" -- in New York City. Winning entries will also be featured as part of the resources produced by the Pontifical Mission Societies to encourage young people and young adults in their understanding and outreach as missionaries, and given national and international distribution.

Given the title "Pontifical" in 1922, the Pontifical Mission Societies are under the direct canonical jurisdiction of the Pope, who, together with the entire body of Bishops, remind the faithful of their Baptismal call to mission, as they gather basic support for more than 1,150 mission dioceses in Asia, Africa, the Pacific Islands and Latin America, where those in need receive an education and health care, while experiencing the loving heart of the Lord through the service of priests, religious Sisters and Brothers, and lay faithful. The Pontifical Mission Societies include the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, the Missionary Childhood Association, the Society of St. Peter Apostle, and the Missionary Union of Priests and Religious.  For more information, visit www.OneFamilyInMission.org.
