CHARLESTON, South Carolina, October 24 /Christian Newswire/ -- Water Missions International (WMI) has been asked by the Honduran government to help provide clean drinking water for up to 250,000 victims displaced by this week's storms and flooding across the country. Currently, a minimum of 10 water treatment systems have been requested. Together, these 10 water systems are capable of purifying 100,000 gallons of water each day.
To enable this disaster response, Water Missions International is seeking immediate funding to support this relief effort. WMI is also in need of air transportation for the water systems and has contacted local government officials and strategic partners for assistance.
Hector Chacón, WMI's Honduran Country Director, is on the ground in the disaster zone. "The situation is not good. Eleven people have been killed by the flood waters and many are still missing," says Chacón. "People are being forced to leave their homes. They have no shelter, no food, and worst of all, no clean water." Chacón plans to meet today with Xiomara Castro de Zelaya, First Lady of Honduras, to discuss WMI’s ability to provide safe drinking water during the emergency.
