Increased Stewardship for Catholic Churches Comes with Improved Security

NEW BERLIN, Wis., Jan. 25, 2012 /Christian Newswire/ -- Stewardship is a challenge for Catholic parishes around the country. Finding ways to engage parishioners financially in a secure environment they are already familiar with can alleviate some of that challenge.

According to the Pew Internet & American Life Study, "certain key internet activities are becoming more uniformly popular across all age groups" and those include "Doing online banking" and "Making online charitable donations." That trend encourages parishes to offer online donation tools to their members, commonly known as eGiving options.

However, that opens up the parish to security concerns and financial liability. "With many eGiving options, the church is responsible for obtaining a credit card merchant account and they have to pass credit card numbers back and forth between members and their office on paper. This can lead to concerns on behalf of parishioners that could limit their participation," said Joe Luedtke, VP of Interactive Media at Liturgical Publications Inc (LPi).

When parishes are selecting an online donation tool they should be concerned about the security of the product, in addition to the flexibility and ease-of-use. All of those features are important in engaging the parish community to change their habits and donate online, and more frequently.

"Using LPi's eGiving product, WeShare, means we take care of all of that. Parishioners set up their own accounts online, our Web site has achieved the highest level of security with a full audit, and members can do all of their donating online, no security questions left unanswered," Luedtke continued.

WeShare, LPi's eGiving solution has recently been certified by a Visa-approved PCI Qualified Security Assessor (PSA) as successfully passing a Level 1 Payment Card Industry (PCI) Data Security Standards (DSS) audit. This ensures churches, and their members, that online donations are secure.
