MARYKNOLL, N.Y., May 22, 2013 /Christian Newswire/ -- Walter F. Sullivan served Virginia's Diocese of Richmond for 29 years as its bishop. Famous for his pastoral leadership and, during the 1980s, a national reputation as a leading "peace bishop" who stood against the climate of the cold war and warned about the global nuclear threat, Bishop Sullivan emerges, in a new biography, as a complex person who faithfully attempted to lead the church with integrity, compassion and love.

Bishop Sullivan guided his flock through the years of post-Vatican II, bringing a human touch to his role and crossing boundaries to foster a spirit of ecumenism. He encouraged the gifts brought forth by the laity and he touched prisoners and others who lived on the margin of society. Yet, through all this and along with many of his fellow bishops, Bishop Sullivan struggled with the clergy sexual abuse crises.

"I am a loyal son of the church," Bishop Sullivan once noted. "It is my home, but I am not a company man."

Authored by essayist, columnist, teacher and author Phyllis Theroux, "The Good Bishop" explains that Bishop Walter Sullivan, who passed away during December 2012, kept faith both with the teachings of Christ and the demands of civic justice. The book is a tribute to a man who often staked unpopular positions while revealing the love of Christ.
