WASHINGTON, Feb. 21, 2013 /Christian Newswire/ -- Shepherding the Next Generation, a network of evangelical pastors and faith leaders, has hired Tom Pearce as its national director. SNG is a network of evangelical pastors and ministry leaders who equip ordinary Christians to live out the commandment to 'love our neighbors as ourselves' and speak out for children in need.

Pearce recently served as the State Representative for the 73rd District, serving the three terms allowed by the state of Michigan. While serving in the State House, Pearce led several faith-based initiatives in Lansing. Pearce also served in his final term as the Dean of his caucus, giving him the responsibility of mentorship of the newly-elected members. During his tenure, he held several leadership roles focusing on policies affecting children and their families.

Prior to serving in the Legislature, Pearce held leadership positions in several para-church organizations including North Kent Service Center, serving struggling families in rural Northern Kent County, and Mel Trotter Ministries, a rescue mission in Grand Rapids, serving the needs of inner-city families. Pearce also served both in full- and part-time roles as part of the ministerial staff of several churches. Most recently, Pearce served as a consultant and board member to multiple area nonprofits.

Pearce's legislative background and experience leading Christian social services agencies will be key for Shepherding the Next Generation, as a leading voice on issues like child abuse and neglect, quality early learning and fatherhood issues.

"The members of Shepherding the Next Generation know that strategies that reduce child abuse and neglect are key to setting children on a healthy path, which means a healthy future," Pearce said. "We are tasked with the biblical mandate from Proverbs, which commands us to 'train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not turn from it.' I am excited to take on this role and help pastors strengthen and restore families," Pearce said.

Pearce has been recognized with several awards and accomplishments: Guardian of Small Business Award, Legislator of the Year, After School Champion Award, Michigan's Children Heroes Award, Literacy Advocate Award, and Fight Crime: Invest in Kids Michigan's Crime Fighter Award.

Pearce is a graduate of Cornerstone University in Grand Rapids with a BA in Communications. He and his wife, Janet, have been married for 34 years, and have two children and three grandchildren.
