WASHINGTON, Dec. 9 /Christian Newswire/ -- Advent is a time to remember Bethlehem as millions of people prepare for the celebration of Christmas and recall the birth of the Christ Child. Thousands of crèche scenes depict this memorable image of how the Holy Family found shelter in a stable to deliver the Baby Jesus. This year, just 500 yards from where Jesus was born, a crèche scene will gather the names of children from around the world in order to help today's Bethlehem families seeking a safe place to deliver their newborns.

Much like Mary, poor women of Bethlehem find hope and a safe place to give birth everyday at Holy Family Hospital -- an obstetrical/gynecological facility situated merely 500-yards away from the traditional birth site of Jesus. It is the only hospital in the region that can handle the complicated medical conditions of women living in extreme poverty. Here modern state-of-the-art birthing facilities and neonatal intensive care units for preemies serve the needs of all Bethlehem women regardless of creed, ethnicity or ability to pay.

This year, Holy Family Hospital will gather children's names and permanently record them inside the Children's Creche located at the Hospital -- a manager scene especially appealing to children. The Hospital is encouraging parents, grandparents and godparents to honor children and loved ones with this special commemoration of their births so near to the birth site of Jesus.

The Children's Creche offers love and support to Bethlehem-area mothers giving birth as well as to the new, little lives beginning so tenuously in the region. The names on permanent display give hope to poor children of Bethlehem who come to visit a new brother or sister at the Hospital. They connect what is happening in their own families with the birth of Our Savior and they see that children around the world care about the suffering of their families.

"Recording names at the Children's Creche is a beautiful way to remember or celebrate a child at Christmastime," Colleen Marotta, Executive Director of the U.S. based Foundation that supports the Hospital, said. "Supporters will be connected in a unique way to the miracle and gift of the birth of Our Savior."

A donation of $100 places a child's name in the Children's Creche. Donors receive a commemorative card to present to each child honored.

Holy Family Hospital delivers 3,200 babies, treats 18,000 women, and saves the lives of 400 distressed newborns in intensive care each year. The hospital staff treats all in need -- without regard to religion, nationality or ability to pay.

Holy Family Hospital of Bethlehem was considered by Pope John Paul II as one of top 100 priorities for the new millennium.
