What American's Had Better Learn from Fukushima

MEDIA ADVISORY, March 15, 2011 /Christian Newswire/ -- "Those who fail to learn from the mistakes of the past are doomed to repeat them." -- George Santayana, philosopher (1905)

There is a disturbingly accurate phrase often heard in the halls of Survivor Mall and Raiders News Network that goes something like this: "Some will survive. Some won't. Guess who."

The meaning behind the unpleasant comment is obvious. While some people plan ahead for disaster, most don't, and that is why chaos and panic thrive during times like now. This week a major earthquake hit Japan sending a tsunami inland and damaging the Fukushima nuclear plant. California is just one of the states monitoring efforts to contain the radiation leaks, as health experts fear a nuclear meltdown could release radiation into the atmosphere that may hitchhike the jet stream and make it to the U.S. and other countries. As a result, tens of thousands of people over the weekend rushed to order Potassium Iodide tablets, which shields the thyroid from radiation damage, depleting the stock of the nation's largest KI suppliers in just 48 hours.

This is Déjà vu all over again.

Following 9-11, unprepared Americans reacted similarly, exhausting emergency suppliers of Potassium Iodide and other disaster products from warehouse shelves within just a couple days. One of the largest Disaster Readiness stores at the time told me they had 10,000 orders per day coming in and that it took 7 months to fulfill the orders. What good do emergency supplies do 7 months after you need them? Not much for the emergency you ordered them for.

Which brings me to my point. Today, a strange paradox exists. The threat of terrorism has escalated, rogue nations are developing the bomb, weather patterns are behaving irregularly, gateways through biotechnology could unleash upon earth pestilence of biblical proportions, and, mark my word, a Japan-like catastrophe is coming to the United States sooner than later and far too many people are going to die unnecessarily from a lack of preparedness. These deaths would be unnecessary because survival preparation is easy and modestly affordable and in some cases free. Under most circumstances, the ability for individuals to remain mobile for a few days to a couple weeks by simply grabbing an inexpensive "survival kit" and heading out is more important than silos filled with long-term storage foods.

Even when we envision a worst-case scenario -- such as a terrorist nuke or ICBM exchange -- low-cost shelters, that can be built at home and combined with a minimal amount of Potassium Iodide, would help keep as much as 99 percent of the population alive, according to one synopsis by the Department of Homeland Security, which envisioned a 10-kiloton bomb going off in Washington, D.C. Simple designs for building practical radiation shelters are available FREE online at places like SurvivorMall.com.
