Archbishop Oscar Romero, who became a voice for the poor during the turbulent time of El Salvador's civil war, was murdered while celebrating Mass in a hospital chapel 33 years ago this March.
Ms. Vigil gathered stories and remembrances from peasants, friends, theologians and pastoral associates to compose the colorful pieces of this multi-faceted biography. A moving portrait of the archbishop through the eyes of the people he touched during his life unfolds in three dimensions. Not simply a legendary hero, or a distant saint and martyr, Archbishop Romero is revealed as a human who had doubts and frailties yet found the courage to listen to others, examine his beliefs and to step forward into a role in history that only he could fill.
