ENUMCLAW, Wash., Jan. 7 /Christian Newswire/ -- Martha Axmann understands the strain of racing for the finish line and the joy of crossing it. So did her daughter, Robyn.

At 26, Robyn lost her life to an astrocytoma, but she never lost her faith or the joy of serving God. She won her race--the race of life described in 2 Timothy 4:7: I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race. I have kept the faith" (NIV).

Axmann continues running her race to win, despite the pain of losing Robyn in 1991 and then, ten years later, her husband. Her new book, "She Won the Race: Footprints of Cancer" (Pleasant Word, 2009), recounts Robyn's life and influence and tells Axmann's own story of faith and determination. Writing the book was Axmann's gold-medal event.

"I had to ask God what I could do to turn this tragedy into a witness for him," Axmann says. "How could Robyn's death glorify him and cause others, especially young people, to think about their life?"

She also wanted to be able to offer comfort to other parents who had lost children. "I felt God was saying to me that if our story were written down, it would be a blessing to them and an encouragement to keep on keeping on."

Reliving events as she wrote was challenging. "I would write in the mornings and then in the afternoons I would do something to get my mind off the depression. I enjoy doing things for someone or some group that needs my help."

Like Robyn, Axmann lives every day to the fullest. "Don't wait for a tomorrow in your life," she says. "Share your talents, run the race of life, and be determined to accomplish your goal for his glory!"

A retired teacher, Axmann sits on the board of trustees for Anderson University in South Carolina. She recently traveled to Romania with the There Is Hope Foundation. Axmann lives in Spartanburg.
