Contact: Dr. Jessica Davis, Faith and Public Policy Institute, 202-507-6373, capitol.hill@faithpolicyinstitute.org

WASHINGTON, Oct. 3, 2013 /Christian Newswire/ -- The Faith and Public Policy Institute launched the "Eradicate Poverty Sunday" national campaign in September to empower the faith community to respond to the growing number of Americans moving into poverty.

The president of the Faith and Public Policy Institute and host of The Moral Agenda, Dr. Jessica Davis, states, "The faith community is the moral voice of America. The moral voice of America is saying, 'Remember the poor.' The faith community must hold the government accountable. The faith community's voice is even more important now as a result of the Government's shutdown. The poor will suffer even more. The Head Start programs and WIC programs are being closed across the country as a result of the shutdown. The faith community must do something and do something now. We must work together to set the moral agenda for the nation regardless of denominational and political affiliations. This is a moral issue."

The U.S. Census Bureau utilizing the 2011 Supplemental Poverty Measure reported that 49.7 million Americans or 16% of the population (28% Hispanic, 26% Black, 17% Asian, and 14 % White) now live below the poverty line, annual income of $22, 811 for a family of four as a result of the unemployment rate, house devaluations, and unprecedented foreclosures.

The "Eradicate Poverty Sunday" is scheduled for the third Sunday of the month. Each member of a registered faith community will receive the 10 point eradicate poverty policy bulletin insert with an invitation to receive the poverty rating guides on the U.S. House and U.S. Senate. The rating guides include a call to collective action. The faith community can become a registered "Eradicate Poverty" site by going to www.EradicatePovertySunday.org.
