ENUMCLAW, Wash., Jan. 3, 2012 /Christian Newswire/ -- Debut author Hollis Hughes, born in Alabama in 1928, experienced the Great Depression firsthand. The Hughes family lived in an old ramshackle house that was uninsulated, without plumbing, or electricity. Wood from the farm was used for cooking and heating. Eggs were bartered for flour, sugar, and coffee. The Hughes kids went barefoot from the last frost of spring to the first frost of autumn. Money was scarce, but there was plenty of food. All four kids were introduced to meaningful work by age six or seven, but considered themselves more fortunate than others in the 1930's who did not have enough to eat.

Hughes' new book, "Mindful of Him" takes place in the late 1950's. During this time in history, writers who wished to be critically acclaimed often wrote from the viewpoint of an existentialist, who believed there was no way of knowing anything about God, and did not believe in absolute values.

"Mindful of Him" details the fictional account of Rob McLain and his quest for truth in the midst of raw anguish. Rather than condemnation, it is told with sensitivity and understanding as seen from inside the heart and mind of this young atheist. Following the loss of his parents, his wife, their unborn child, and his will to live, Rob doesn't blame God -- because he no longer believes in God. While making his way through rugged wilderness on and alongside the Canoba River, he meets someone at its very source he had not expected, the Source of truth, convincing the young skeptic He was indeed mindful of him.

Hughes recognizes the spiritual vulnerability of society today and says he wrote his novel as "an antidote to existentialism in literature . . . to increase the faith of the reader that there is purpose and meaning to life."

A retired educator and school counselor, Hollis Hughes enjoys travel, fishing, hiking, and gardening; he attends Mount Zion Baptist Church and he and his wife make their home in Alabama.
