Physician Diet Expert Says, 'New Dads with Depression are at Risk for Weight Gain'

Contact: Rita Hancock MD, 405-447-4999, rita.hancock@gmail.com

OKLAHOMA CITY, May 20 /Christian Newswire/ -- In response to a new study that shows that 10% of dads experience depression after the birth of their children, diet expert Rita Hancock M.D. says, "It's okay to temporarily feel depressed because of your new role as daddy, but avoid overeating just because you're stressed or anxious or you'll end up with a new set of problems."

Dr. Rita understands the roots of emotional eating. She studied nutrition and obesity psychology at Cornell, fat metabolism through an NIH grant, and personally lost 75 pounds and kept it off for 26 years.

She tells new dads, "Before reaching for food, take the Apple Test. If you aren't hungry enough to eat an apple, you aren't physically hungry. You want food for some other reason." In many cases, new dads are triggered to eat by non-physical factors such as fatigue, fear of living up to expectations, financial stress, fear of aging, and fear of failure at parenting.

In addition to the Apple Test, Dr. Rita offers both men and women other methods to avoid emotional eating in her book, "The Eden Diet--How To Eat Treats, Enjoy Your Food, And Lose Weight," which was released in paperback by Zondervan in December, 2009.

Physicians have rallied behind Dr. Rita's efforts. Surgeon Clark Gerhart M.D. of Pennsylvania said, "The Eden Diet relies on medically proven healthful eating habits and avoids extreme dieting techniques that rarely produce long term weight control and can be deleterious to your health." And, family physician, Steve Cox, D.O. of Oklahoma said, "The Eden Diet will teach you to recognize true hunger and become known as the one that can walk away from the buffet."

The Eden Diet is a no-condemnation Christian weight loss program that advocates eating according to hunger and fullness signals rather than ever-changing diet fads that rarely produce long-term behavioral change. The program includes a book, workbook, audio CDs for relaxation and extensive free support, including support groups, a newsletter, and an online interactive forum/blogging site/chatroom.
