Increasing Divorce Rate for Second and Third Marriages is the Result of Misplaced Identity

GREENVILLE, SC, Jan. 19 /Christian Newswire/ -- Statistics provided by the Forest Institute of Professional Psychology show that while approximately 50 percent of American marriages end in divorce, that rate increases to 67 percent for second marriages and 73 percent for third marriages. Laura Baker, founder of Prasso Ministries, says that people who divorce once are likely to do it again because they are searching for identity in another person's love instead of the love of their Heavenly Father.

Baker challenges those who have been through their first divorce to reevaluate who they are in Christ before getting into new relationships. "It's easy to think that the answer is in a new relationship, but if the person is looking for their identity in the love of another person, the relationship is likely to fail. Our identity can only successfully be found in the love of our Heavenly Father and in the identity He provides. Once that is settled, new relationships have a chance to flourish."

According to the Discovery Channel, the divorce rate is higher for childless couples. This could be, sociologists think, because being childless can lead to loneliness. Baker says, "The same principle applies. It's not healthy to find your identity in being a parent anymore than it is to find your identity in being a spouse. True identity is found in Jesus Christ and who we are in Him."
