LOS ANGELES, Sept. 20, 2012 /Christian Newswire/ -- On Friday morning, September 21, 2012, Steve Amerson will be singing at the arrival ceremony for the space shuttle Endeavour at Los Angeles International Airport. He will be singing 'America the Beautiful' under the direction of Aram Gharabekian of the Open Music Society Foundation, a Los Angeles based artists organization. Upon arrival at LAX there will be a ceremony attended by 300 dignitaries and guests. The ceremony, held at the United Airlines hanger, will receive global media coverage.
Around 10:30 am on Friday, or shortly after, watch for flyovers of Endeavour in the Los Angeles area. There will be opportunities to see Endeavour passing regional landmarks such as, its future home at the California Science Center, Los Angeles City Hall, Disneyland, the Getty Center, Griffith Observatory, Long Beach Aquarium of the Pacific, Malibu, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Queen Mary, Universal Studios and Venice Beach, among others. Times for flyovers are flexible, pending weather conditions and operational constraints.
The Endeavour will spend a few weeks at a United Airlines hangar undergoing preparations for transport and display. Then, Endeavour will travel through city streets on a 12-mile journey from the airport to the California Science Center arriving in the evening on October 13, 2012. This will be the first, last and only time a space shuttle will travel through urban, public city streets. It is truly a national treasure!
The California Science Center was named by NASA as the new home of Space Shuttle Endeavour, which completed its last mission in 2011 following a 25-year run and close to 123 million miles of space travel. Thus Endeavor’s trip to Los Angeles is considered something of a homecoming, given that the shuttle was built in Palmdale, near Los Angeles.
