ENUMCLAW, Wash., July 6, 2011 /Christian Newswire/ -- Chris and Michelle Groff thought that if they simply loved their kids they would instinctively know how to parent them well. "But we later realized that our parenting decisions were greatly influenced by how we had been raised and the culture around us." Chris admits, "When our sons were growing up, our tendency was to rescue them from the consequences of their choices or try to teach them by giving commands and lectures." Unfortunately, both boys rebelled. When their youngest son became involved in drugs and criminal activity, they decided to send him to a residential treatment facility in Colorado. "Most of what we learned about parenting came in the crucible of tough problems and lots of trials and tears. But the end result was a more authentic relationship with our sons and with God."

Another result was a collaborative effort with their son's therapist at the facility, Lee Long, and his wife Charlotte, that resulted in their ministry-Parenting by Design. "We started with a single live multi-lesson class in 2004," Chris explains, "and we've grown to a ministry that offers parenting information in a variety of ways. We have DVD's, CD's, Online Learning, e-devotionals, newsletters, books, booklets, etc, all available through the website parentingbydesign.com.

Recently they added a book to that list of resources. "Timeless Originals" is a 90-Day devotional that applies Scripture to the daily challenges of parenting. Readers will see how God interacts with His children by establishing boundaries, giving choices within limits, and allowing them to experience the consequences of their decisions, and yet doing it all with perfect empathy and staying relationally bonded. As Chris points out, God has a lot to say about how parents and children can work together to accomplish the good works He prepared for them.
