Ken Canedo, Bob Hurd Collaborate on Mass of Glory Revision for OCP
Contact: Zach Laney, OCP, 503-460-5311

PORTLAND, Ore., July 15 /Christian Newswire/ -- To help parishes prepare their communities for the third edition of the Roman Missal, OCP has chosen five new and four revised Mass settings for initial publication in the company's missal and hymnal products. One of the revised settings selected is Mass of Glory from composers Ken Canedo and Bob Hurd.

"There were many challenges, but our underlying composing principle was to respect the official texts," said Canedo. "Bob and I are hopeful the familiar themes in Mass of Glory will help ease choirs and assemblies into praying the new translation."

This parish-tested setting from Canedo and Hurd will be included in an Order of Mass supplement, which will be made available to OCP customers using resources affected by the new translation.

"When I was composing various parts of this Mass, I had two musical models in mind," said Hurd. "One was 'gospel music,' especially as I had experienced it in Masses in South Central Los Angeles. This 'gospel music' style was already given in the first pieces Ken Canedo had composed and shared with me. But for some of the more lyrical parts of the Mass, especially the presider parts, I was inspired by the music of Gershwin."
