LAKE FOREST, Calif., March 6, 2012 /Christian Newswire/ -- International speaker, best-selling author and Bible teacher Kay Warren explains the true meaning of joy in her new book, "Choose Joy: Because Happiness Isn't Enough" (Revell, April 2012).

In "Choose Joy," Warren shows readers, based on Biblical truths and her personal life experiences, what joy really is, where to find it, and how to choose it in good times and bad. Having faced two bouts of cancer, watched as life-threatening illnesses attacked her children and grandchildren and lived with mild depression for most of her life, Warren knows firsthand that many individuals confuse joy with happiness, believing when life gets tough, joy is unattainable.

"Here is the foundational truth each of us needs to remember: God is the only true source of joy," Warren writes. "Joy is the settled assurance that God is in control of all the details of my life, the quiet confidence that ultimately everything is going to be all right, and the determined choice to praise God in all things."

Using Biblical references, Warren shows how we were created by God to personify joy and how Jesus was a man of joy. She points out, despite the commonly held belief the Bible is a book of doom, it contains 545 references to joy, laughter and merriment compared to 150 allusions to tears, sorrow and sadness.

She outlines several common false sources of joy -- people, places, possessions, position and personality -- and encourages readers to adopt a new "heavenly" value system.

Providing practical advice on how to nurture joy in oneself and others, Warren helps readers understand how to daily see joy in all things through straightforward steps such as simplifying life, finding a joy mentor and living in the moment.

"We keep trying to line up all the little ducks in a row, to smooth out the rough spots, and to shore up all the wobbly places, still convinced that if we get our act together, we finish the huge project, our health clears up, we get a raise, or we can just get things right, we can finally be joyful," Warren writes. "But if you're going to experience joy, you must choose it -- in spite of, even if, and in the middle of everything else."

Warren penned "Choose Joy" based on a Bible study she first taught at Saddleback Church in July 2011, drawing more than 5,000 women for the four-week sessions.

Co-founder of Saddleback Church with her husband, Rick, Warren has a passion for inspiring and motivating others to make a difference with their lives. She is best known for her 10 years as a tireless advocate for those living with HIV and AIDS, and the orphaned and vulnerable children left behind.
