ENUMCLAW, Wash., Nov. 30, 2011 /Christian Newswire/ -- While Susan Newman taught university-level English in China for seven years, she also shared her Christian faith with the Chinese people. One day she was arrested and taken to the police station where ten officers questioned her for five hours. "Do you baptize people at your home?" they demanded to know. "Who is your boss?"
During the interrogation, her faith did not waver. "The police were very, very angry," she reports, "but strangely enough, I did not feel fear; I felt compassion for them."
In her new book, "The Land Beyond . . . In His Footsteps", Susan recounts how she was born in Canada to English parents who viewed believing in God as "ridiculous" and "a pathetic crutch." At age seventeen, she returned to England to study music and English and eventually became a very successful businesswoman. In 1990, through a series of amazing events, Susan experienced a mid-life conversion to Christianity and God called her to China as a missionary. She saw God work in supernatural ways, and she led thousands of Communist-reared people to faith in Christ. She also came alongside abandoned children in a state orphanage before she was arrested and eventually deported. Her story covers three continents and many exciting events including the tumultuous return of Hong Kong to China, the bombing of the Chinese Embassy in Kosovo, and desperate police attempts to suppress rising discontent throughout the vast land. Events unfold as the nation rises to superpower status.
Susan Newman now lives in Taiwan as a missionary/pastor with the Assemblies of God. She has three children and eight grandchildren.
