BOMET, Kenya, Aug. 5, 2016 /Christian Newswire/ -- Tenwek Hospital, located in Bomet, Kenya, is a ministry of World Gospel Mission and Africa Gospel Church. The hospital, which started as a single-nurse dispensary in 1937, is now a 300-bed hospital and training center. In addition to being the area's primary hospital, Tenwek has recently expanded its outreach to minister to patients and families with special needs.

Dylan Nugent, a doctor at Tenwek, stated, "There are more than 7,000 'persons with disabilities' living in our country, according to a recent government survey, and there is not a single clinic devoted to their care. Many are children who are unable to attend school, participate in community activities, or get the medical care they need. Tenwek's initial goals include providing low cost healthcare and medical equipment to children with needs ranging from clubfoot casting to specialized wheelchairs to amputation prosthetics and a host of other assistive devices and rehab services."

Solomon Rop, a physical therapist at Tenwek, is leading this new venture with the help of some enthusiastic ministry partners who have seen firsthand the results of his care. Nugent said this about Rop's efforts: "The data he has collected and the resources he gathered made supporting this expansion at Tenwek an easy decision."

WGM missionary Angela Olsen will be joining the special needs clinic soon to help Solomon. When asked about working with special needs patients, Angela said, "I hope to have a role in educating Kenyan families and teachers who work with children with special needs. This is a cause near to our hearts, as our sweet Samuel was born in 2012 with Down syndrome."

Families and children are getting much-needed assistance because of this new clinic. Children are walking again and getting the attention they need. Medical needs, such as prosthetics, are expensive. Many Kenyan families do not have the income needed to afford such items. Part of this expansion will be to partner with others who believe in this cause.

If you would like to donate prosthetics or other assistive devices, please contact World Gospel Mission at micah.metz@wgm.org.
