WASHINGTON, June 2, 2024 /Christian Newswire/ -- A public witness and prayer vigil is planned to be held at the Chinese Embassy in remembrance of the 35th Memorial of the Tiananmen Square Massacre.  The event will be on Monday, June 3 at 1:00 PM. The Embassy is located at 3505 International Pl NW, Washington, DC 20008.

As part of the public witness, activists will lay red fabric and photos on the public sidewalk at the Chinese Embassy's front door. The fabric and photos will be a visible reminder of the violence and bloodshed by the Chinese Army against thousands of peaceful student democracy protesters murdered in Tiananmen Square.

Rev. Patrick Mahoney, Director of the Washington, D.C. based Christian Defense Coalition, will also be praying for human rights and freedom in China and Hong Kong.

Rev. Mahoney has been an international voice for human rights in China for 40 years. He participated in a public prayer vigil and demonstration in Tiananmen Square during the 2008 Beijing Olympics with other activists. They were arrested and threatened with a 6-month prison sentence. Rev. Mahoney is currently banned from China for his human rights work.

Regarding the Tiananmen Square demonstration at the Chinese Embassy, Rev. Mahoney comments:

"We are gathering at the Chinese Embassy on the 35th Anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre to remember and honor thousands of heroic students who were murdered and brutalized by the Chinese Army in their historic struggle for freedom.

"We will be laying red fabric and photos at the front door of the Embassy as a powerful visual reminder of the violence and bloodshed these students experienced and the continued brutality against those who continue to seek freedom in China. We will also be praying for human rights in China and Hong Kong as we ask God to comfort and give strength all those who are now imprisoned and facing genocide.

"America, and the free nations of the world, must always remember the violence of Tiananmen Square and passionately work to ensure dignity, equality and freedom for the beautiful people of China.

"We echo the words of Holocaust Survivor and Nobel Peace Prize winner, Elie Wiesel, as he says; 'We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented.'"
