HOLLYWOOD, Calif., Aug. 6, 2015 /Christian Newswire/ -- An immersive social media and online campaign for "CAPTIVE," a new film from Paramount Pictures based on the true-to-life story of a young, single mother held hostage by a runaway fugitive, is asking fans to answer the simple question "What held you captive?" using #FollowYourPurpose.

The campaign follows the theme of "CAPTIVE," which tells the miraculous true story of Ashley Smith, who in 2005, was at a crossroads both personally and spiritually, when God stepped in during a harrowing encounter with fugitive Brian Nichols. Through the reading of Rick Warren's No. 1 best-selling book, "The Purpose Driven Life," the lives of Smith and Nichols both were changed forever.

A gripping national news story, Smith appeared on the "Oprah" show after her ordeal and was surprised with a visit from Warren.

"There are two great stories in Ashley's life; one of them is you don't have to be perfect to be used by God," Warren said on "Oprah." "The other is that no matter how big your problems are, God's purpose is bigger."

"CAPTIVE," which opens in theaters on September 18, 2015, stars David Oyelowo ("SELMA") and Kate Mara ("FANTASTIC FOUR," "House of Cards") and features Leonor Varela, Jessica Oyelowo, with Mimi Rogers and Michael K. Williams. The film shares not only the story of Smith and Nichols, but also the powerful message found in "The Purpose Driven Life."

"The most compelling movies are the true stories that make you want to stand up and cheer," said Warren, pastor of Saddleback Church. "'CAPTIVE' will captivate you with the awesome power of the second chance."

Directed by veteran filmmaker Jerry Jameson, "CAPTIVE" is based on the book "Unlikely Angel" by Ashley Smith with Stacy Mattingly. The film's screenplay is by Brian Bird. Produced by Terry Botwick, Jerry Jameson, Lucas Akoskin, Alex Garcia, Katrina Wolfe, David Oyelowo and Ken Wales. The executive producers are Santiago Garcia Galván, Jonathan Gray, Brian Bird, Elliott Lester and Ralph Winter.
