A Man of His Word: Bush Fulfills Promise to Veto Human Stem Cell Bill

WASHINGTON, July 19 /Christian Newswire/ -- Operation Rescue applauds President George W. Bush for fulfilling his promise today by using the first veto of his presidency to nix a bill that would have allowed increased federal funding for life-destructive human embryo experimentation.

Bush signed the veto surrounded by “Snowflake” children, kids who were adopted as frozen embryos from In Vitro fertilization facilities. Bush referred to them by stating, “They remind us of what is lost when embryos are destroyed in the name of research. They remind us that we all begin our lives as a small collection of cells. And they remind us that in our zeal for new treatments and cures, America must never abandon our fundamental morals.”

Bush continued, “As science brings us every closer to unlocking the secrets of human biology, it also offers temptations to manipulate human life and violate human dignity. Our conscience in history as a nation demand that we resist this temptation.”

Troy Newman, President of Operation Rescue, was elated at the news.

“It is gratifying to see President Bush being a man of his word on this life and death issue,” Newman said. “This is the first time he has unleashed the veto pen and it is against the pro-abortion, anti-life crowd.”

“When we diminish the worth of human life at the most vulnerable stages to something that only has value in how it may serve others, then we diminish the sanctity of all life. Where does it stop? Today perhaps the utilitarians may destroy human embryos in some humanistic notion stolen from science fiction shows that the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. But life is really not some cheesy Star Trek episode, and if we stop valuing the lives of the few, the lives of the many eventually won’t mean much either,” said Newman.

“Today we applaud President Bush for drawing the line against the inhuman exploitation and experimentation upon defenseless human beings at the earliest stages of development, and urge him to do everything within his power as President of the United States to extend legal protections to all pre- born children.”

Operation Rescue is one of the leading pro-life Christian organizations in the nation. Its activities are on the cutting edge of the abortion issue, taking direct action to restore legal personhood to the pre- born and stop abortion in obedience to biblical mandates.
