MONROE, Wis., March 28, 2012 /Christian Newswire/ -- Bristol House Ltd. announces the April 2 publication of Forgetting How to Blush: United Methodism's Compromise with the Sexual Revolution. Written by Karen Booth, the book is a comprehensive account of The United Methodist Church's decades-long controversy over human sexuality -- a battle that will be fought once again at the denomination's General Conference (legislative gathering) in Tampa April 24 through May 5.

United Methodist Bishop Timothy Whitaker (Florida) says, "Anyone who wishes to understand all sides of the debate about sexuality in the church should read the story told in this book. This well-researched book is an invitation to critically reflect upon the theological presuppositions that have guided the effort to change the church's moral teaching and pastoral direction about sexuality."

A result of over eight years of well-documented research, Forgetting How to Blush systematically exposes every aspect of the compromise that The United Methodist Church (and its predecessor bodies) made with a sexually wayward culture. Chapters examine: the denomination's mid-century flirtation with Alfred Kinsey's Darwinian view of sexual variety and freedom; its promotion of "situational ethics" in sex-ed curriculum and its use of pornography in young adult programming; its abandonment of biblically faithful ideology and language regarding homosexuality; its failure to hold disobedient and dishonest members and leaders accountable; its toleration of unethical legislative manipulation by outside interest groups; and its sacrifice of principle and pastoral effectiveness on the altar of faux unity. Similar choices have resulted in numerical and spiritual decline and schism throughout the historic mainline denominations -- among Presbyterians, Lutherans, Episcopalians and Congregationalists. Non-affiliated and evangelical church bodies could be next.
