MONTEREY, Calif., July 24, 2014 /Christian Newswire/ -- It came without warning. While relaxing at home one day, Paul Sybert suffered a "stroke" that left his arm and leg numb and severely impaired his ability to walk. The ischemic stroke, caused by a clot in his brain that cut off the blood flow to his brain cells, led to an emergency room visit, a lengthy hospital stay, and months of arduous rehabilitation. Through it all, Sybert never gave up hope for a complete recovery. In his new book, "I Know How Hard You Work: A Journey Through Stroke Recovery" (published by iUniverse) Sybert now shares his inspiring journey from a debilitating stroke to his remarkable return to health.

Through a mixture of instruction and support, Sybert shares each step of his healing process to help stroke survivors learn to cope. He outlines the difficulty of physical therapy, the constant emotional turmoil, and the importance of focusing on a healthy self-image. Each chapter also includes a set of therapeutic topics ideal for exploring one's own frustrations and hopes during recovery.

An excerpt from "I Know How Hard You Work:"

Soon I would be going home. I was considered unique because I lived alone and had an independent lifestyle, and my home had some stairs. They knew that when they released me there would be no one at home to care for me, so they put me in the category of needing a little extra, I guess. They walked me longer and harder. They said, 'You live alone, so we have to do this.' They taught me to climb stairs. When they found that I was afraid of heights, they used a special stairwell, the one leading to the roof. They did their best to teach me to adjust, to be unafraid, and to move forward into the unknown into a life that had become 'undefined.'

Deeply personal, "I Know How Hard You Work" offers a gentle, calming presence in the midst of struggle and gives readers the strength to find their way back to good health.
