CHARLESTON, WV, Aug. 19, 2013 /Christian Newswire/ -- Life Legal Defense Foundation has issued a letter to the West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey calling for state government to regulate abortion for the safety and protection of women. This action has been prompted by a West Virginia lawsuit over a forced abortion. Dana Cody, Executive Director of Life Legal Defense Foundation, explained to Morrisey that the unique position of abortion clinics greatly increases the risk of injury or death and therefore demands strong oversight.

Cody listed three factors that necessitate strict regulation to avert the operation of "back alley clinics":

"Abortion is an invasive medical procedure that has the potential to create life-threatening conditions for the mother, abortion clinics are usually stand-alone facilities that specialize in reproductive medicine only, and abortionists are usually 'circuit rider' physicians who do not stay on site long enough to develop a normal doctor-patient relationship."

The letter cites multiple cases that validate the need for abortion industry regulation, including:

Planned Parenthood's Wilmington, Delaware, clinic where unsanitary conditions, and "meat-market-style, assembly-line abortions" caused serious injuries to five women before that clinic came under serious scrutiny by state health authorities.

The Alabama Department of Public Health's permanent injunction against Birmingham abortionist Bruce Norman, at a clinic that has a history of unmitigated health and safety violations, has not impeded his provision of abortions at another clinic in Jackson, Mississippi.

National Abortion Federation's disregard for the appalling conditions and violations of basic safety standards at clinics operated by Kermit Gosnell, allowed the Philadelphia abortionist convicted of murdering babies born live to practice.

A current lawsuit has brought West Virginia's minimal level of abortion oversight into the spotlight. Twenty-six year old Itai Gravely is suing the state's largest abortion provider for causing her serious physical and psychological injury. Gravely asserts that she was restrained against her will after asking that her abortion procedure be stopped and was further injured when the abortionist left the baby's head inside her. Gravely in being legally represented in her lawsuit by counsel from Family Policy Council of West Virginia and Alliance Defending Freedom.
