Contact: Tom Ciesielka, 312-422-1333, tc@tcpr.net

DETROIT, April 15, 2015 /Christian Newswire/ -- Thomas More Society chief counsel Tom Brejcha will be available for interviews following today's oral arguments in a pivotal First Amendment rights case. Today, in the Michigan Court of Appeals, the nonprofit law firm challenges a personal protective order requiring a pro-life sidewalk counselor to stay at least 500 feet away from a Detroit abortion clinic. This order, argues the Thomas More Society, violates pro-life advocate Chris Coatney's First Amendment rights and must be reversed.

Thomas More Society attorney Patrick Gillen will present evidence supporting the lifting of the protection order, which was issued after abortion facility manager Denise Burrell alleged that threats against her were made by Coatney. This was issued against Coatney despite video evidence demonstrating that Burrell and colleagues were the ones threatening and abusing him.

"This protective order is a blatant attempt by opponents to shut down Mr. Coatney's peaceful efforts to save babies and their mothers from abortion," stated Brejcha. "We are appealing to free Mr. Coatney from this gag order and to uphold his free speech rights, that he may continue his witness to the sanctity of life."
