WASHINGTON, May 8 /Christian Newswire/ -- The American public needs to understand that without federal enforcement, Supreme Court decisions mean very little, and partial-birth abortions could be performed by abortion providers for many months without any consequences.

It is important for the Department of Justice to give citizens the assurance that partial-birth abortions will be banned and those who continue to perform them will face punishment.

Rev. Patrick J. Mahoney, Director of the Christian Defense Coalition, comments, "Partial-birth abortion is a barbaric procedure which the American people overwhelmingly want to see completely banned.   Now that the United States Supreme Court has upheld a bipartisan ban of the procedure passed by Congress and signed by President Bush, it is time for the Department of Justice to share with the public how and when they plan to enforce the partial-birth ban.

"A Supreme Court decision means very little if that decision is not enforced.  It would be tragic if partial-birth abortions continued for months because the Department of Justice dragged their feet on enforcing the ban.  It is imperative for citizens to know that the rule of law is being enforced by the federal government and that those who violate the law will be brought to justice.

"As of today, the ban on partial-birth abortion has not taken effect.  Our hope and prayer is that the Bush Administration will move quickly and aggressively to see that innocent life is protected and the law is enforced."
