ENUMCLAW, Wash., July 25 /Christian Newswire/ -- A report recently published in the "Lancet" medical journal revealed that parents can raise their children's IQ by engaging in something as simple as play. Suggestions included sending kids into the backyard to explore, making homemade toys as a family, and sticking with activities that require thought and imagination. Children who knew how to play had higher IQ, regardless of their background and upbringing.

New York Pastor Bob Flanagan explores the concept of children's Spiritual Intelligence, or SQ, and how that can be encouraged just as IQ can be encouraged. In his new book, "Growing a Soul: A Practical Guide to Raising Your Child with Spiritual Intelligence", Flanagan guides parents to focus on spiritual development. To Flanagan, spiritual development is the capstone for other important areas of intelligence, including physical, social, and even IQ. In his book Flanagan shows parents how to be "saints" to their children by modeling and mentoring, using Scripture as a guide for parenting (particularly the teachings of Jesus in His Sermon on the Mount). He also encourages parents to incorporate Bible reading, church participation, and prayer into daily life.

Like many parents, the importance of living out godly principles became even more important when Bob Flanagan had children. "It is one thing to be a Christian for yourself," he says, "But when my children were born, I was suddenly responsible for bringing up my daughter and son in the faith." "Growing a Soul" brings together life-lessons learned as a Christian parent and pastor.

Each chapter includes questions for parents to reflect on and some include activities and suggestions for issues to discuss with their children. As the author says, "Parents will learn how to be better examples for their children," and being an example is key to spiritual intelligence.
