WILLS POINT, Texas, March 25, 2016 /Christian Newswire/ -- Gospel for Asia (GFA)-supported workers delivered nearly 4,000 gallons of water this week on World Water Day (March 22) to stricken residents of three areas in Delhi, hard-hit by a disruption in the city's main supply source caused by a political protest.

Water was distributed to more than 1,000 people in three Delhi neighborhoods, with each household receiving two to 13 gallons. Residents there have suffered from severe water shortages, requiring residents to buy water daily until recently.

"We sent in tanker trucks to help those with life-threatening needs," said K.P. Yohannan, founder and international director of GFA. "We have been actively praying about this water crisis since it began and are very grateful to have a small part in working alongside the efforts the government is making to help bring relief."

The water distribution took place on World Water Day, first designated by the United Nations in 1992. Delhi suffered its current water shortage after Jat protesters disrupted water flow to the city's 19 million residents on Feb. 19.

The government has restored water service in many places, but some areas of Delhi are still struggling with shortages, even though the protests have ended.

"We bring and drink water from very far.  Thank you for this help," said one recipient. "We are ever grateful to you."

GFA has been active in helping to provide water to residents in the Delhi area even before the current crisis. In 2015, they helped build "Jesus Wells" to supply consistent water in the area.

"In Scripture, Jesus tells us He is the living water," said Yohannan. "As we help provide physical water to these communities, our actions are a tangible example of His heart and compassion."
