DANBURY, Nov. 11, 2015 /Christian Newswire/ -- To mark the 70th year of helping veterans, Guideposts is declaring November "Veterans Awareness Month" in an effort to bring the tremendous sacrifices of those who serve our country to the forefront of national attention. Guideposts believes one day is not enough to honor those who have given so much to our country. Many of these brave men and women return from service fighting their own personal battles.

Randy Dexter, the subject of the November cover story of Guideposts magazine, writes about his own battle with post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Randy is not alone. More than 1,000 veterans of the Afghanistan and Iraq wars are diagnosed with PTSD each week.

Each day a staggering 18 to 22 veterans' lives are lost to suicide and on any given night, more than 50,000 veterans are homeless.

"We can't always comprehend the level of pain veterans or their families suffer. We can, however, provide a vehicle that allows them to tell their stories—and be sure their stories are available to others in similar circumstances," states John F. Temple, Guideposts CEO.  "If we reach one person who can identify with the face and the words of a fellow veteran, and have renewed his or her hope — we know that we will have an impact," states Temple.

Founded by Dr. Norman Vincent Peale and his wife Ruth Stafford Peale in 1945, Guideposts is in a unique position to launch this effort, based on decades of work with military and veterans and a community that is deeply committed to that outreach.

Guideposts distributes resources and materials to hospitals and VA centers worldwide to provide encouragement, faith, and hope to active service members, veterans, and their families.

The reason for this initiative is simple – because one day is not enough. While we honor our veterans on November 11, the challenges faced by veterans last far longer than a day.
