ENUMCLAW, Wash., April 8 /Christian Newswire/ -- According to statistics put out by the Administration Office of the U.S. Courts, bankruptcy filings are up 28.9 percent compared to last year. With the latest financial crisis on Wall Street, those numbers are expected to continue rising. The Associated Press reports recent Fed interest rate cuts a response to "the worst financial crisis since the 1929 stock market crash."

When Betty Odak moved to California from Kenya, she made a lot of financial mistakes -- mistakes she says could have been easily avoided. After filing for bankruptcy in 2007, Betty decided to share her insights, lessons, and personal victories in her new book, "Before, After & Beyond Bankruptcy" (Pleasant Word, 2008).

"I would like to accomplish two things - inform people who have not gotten into debt, and help those who are already in debt, those who have already given up." Topics from "Before, After, & Beyond Bankruptcy" include:

• How to be a conscientious steward of your money

• How to keep accurate records

• How to use credit cards responsibly

• How to honor God with your money

Odak -- a transplant from Kenya -- is particularly empathetic towards foreigners moving to the United States. From her book: "How can the availability of credit help those who never have had credit in their lives? This book explains the struggles, problems, solutions, and suggestions to understanding financial management. Anyone willing to learn a few tips can be a successful credit user and avoid financial traps."

A Marriage and Family Therapist, Odak lives in Redlands, California. She is the proud mother of two adult daughters, Annette and Valerie. Her mother, step-mother, sister, and five brothers still live in Kenya.
