GREENVILLE, S.C., Nov. 20, 2019 /Christian Newswire/ -- The month of November is recognized as National Adoption Awareness Month. Traditionally observed the Saturday before Thanksgiving the apex, #nationaladoptionday is full of astounding stories of how some of these extraordinary families came to be.

Approximately 135,000 children are adopted in the US each year. Of the adoptions which do not involve stepparent scenarios, 59 percent are reported to be children from the foster/welfare system, while 26 percent are adoptions of children from countries outside of the US. Author of "Through Tears and Sugar Cubes" and adoptive parent of two children L.G. Gibson is no exception when it comes to amazing adoption stories. Having four children already, adoption was not on Gibson's bucket list in 1989 when she, along with her husband, embarked on her first mission trip to the nation of Haiti. Her story began when she met a local Haitian woman who to this day remains a true companion. The pair of "fast-friends" quickly developed a deep connection as the woman aided Gibson in learning her way around. Gibson quickly fell in love with the nation and its people, and particularly this growing family.

When the woman's third child, Ricardo, was seventeen months old, he weighed a mere eleven pounds. His prognosis grew dimmer by the day. As Ricardo neared death, the desperate mother approached Gibson for her help. She wanted Gibson to take the child up the mountain to the local orphanage so that her other young children would not have to witness his passing.

Gibson was overcome with faith and purpose. With a child near death and suffering from over five life-threatening diseases, she embarked on a journey to bring the child to the United States for medical attention. Running on a tarmac with a half-dead child in her arms to a plane that was inexplicably delayed, where the airline seat she could not afford and didn't exist, and with no visa for the child, Gibson was determined to save this child's life. Despite these circumstances, the child who many presumed was dead made it to the United States and gradually recovered.

Gibson has continued to embrace the call on her life to reach out and save those who may otherwise see very dismal circumstances. In her upcoming second work, "Through Tears and Sugar Cubes No More," Gibson shares more of this miraculous story of Ricardo and how every life has a purpose.
