ENUMCLAW, Wash., Sept. 10 /Christian Newswire/ -- Born in 1960 on the island of Dominica with very few possessions or privileges, Josephine Durand knows the struggles of a child in need. Her parents, with no means of provision, sent Josephine away for adoption at the age of seven. Facing issues of self-esteem and cries for value, Josephine's life changed in an unexpected way when she was forced to work as a teenager in Guadaloupe for the purpose of providing income to her birth family. Separated and alone, she needed someone willing to pour into her life. Eventually Josephine found a church whose leaders recognized her potential and took her under their wing. They affirmed her value, restoring dignity and respect.

Within a short time, Josephine began to believe in herself. As she committed her life to serving God, she stepped up to lead youth groups and assist her mentors with church planting. For sixteen years Josephine worked as a child care provider and ministered as a role model and mentor in Guadaloupe.

Josephine continues to empower children by giving them a peer role model in her new book, "Raisha" [Pleasant Word, 2008]. Raisha's openness touches people's lives wherever she goes. Through her adventures, children can see that they, too, can make a difference in someone's life.

Writing from a grateful heart, Josephine acknowledges her painful experiences and uses her influence of one to touch the lives of many. "Never in a million years did I ever have in mind that I would be where I am today," she expressed in a recent interview. "I can only say that . . . it's a miracle. I believe that it's God's way of showing how he can use me as I am."

And she "is" being used. Though married and living in Chicago, Josephine's influence lingers on the islands of Dominica and Guadaloupe. In a bold, generous move, she has pledged to give a portion of the proceeds from the sales of "Raisha" toward equipping the children of those islands.
