WORKSHOP OVERVIEW

Fierce debates about human rights and religious freedom in China are intensifying as the Beijing Olympics draw near. This free seminar will equip journalists to report on these issues during the Olympics and beyond. Whether you are traveling to China or reporting from the U.S., you'll get advice and resources that will help you frame stories, track down sources and add context to your reporting at a time when China's global influence is on the rise.

SPEAKERS

  • Fenggang Yang is an associate professor of sociology at Purdue University who specializes in religious change in China and its social and political implications. 
  • Carol Hamrin is a research professor at George Mason University and senior associate with the Global China Center in Charlottesville, Va. She specializes in religious rights policy issues in China.
  • Ming Wan is professor of government and politics and director of the Global Affairs Program at George Mason University. He is the author of Human Rights in Chinese Foreign Relations: Defining and Defending National Interests. 
  • Stephen Angle is associate professor of philosophy at Wesleyan University. He is the author of Human Rights and Chinese Thought: A Cross-Cultural Inquiry and maintains a web page on human rights in China.
  • Bob Dietz is the Asia Program coordinator for the Committee to Protect Journalists, which promotes press freedom worldwide and has published a special report on China and the press for the Olympics.
