WASHINGTON, Dec. 2, 2014 /Christian Newswire/ -- Rev. Patrick J. Mahoney, Director of the Christian Defense Coalition and pastor of Church on the Hill in Washington, D.C has a long history of fighting for human rights and religious freedom in China.

Some of Rev. Mahoney's past activities involving China include:

Mahoney was arrested in House Speaker Newt Gingrich's office seeking their release and joined the prisoners on a hunger strike through the Christmas Holiday.

·         Helped organize a nationwide campaign for the release of blind civil rights activist Chen Guangcheng and was arrested in front of the White House.

·         Helped lead protests in Tiananmen Square during the Beijing Olympics speaking out for religious freedom, human rights, free speech and against the policy of forced abortion. Rev. Mahoney was arrested twice, threatened with a 6-month prison sentence and was deported.

·         Has led numerous demonstrations at the Chinese Embassy in Washington, D.C and at Chinese consulates across the nation.

With respect to this his hunger strike, Rev. Mahoney states;

"I will be joining with Joshua Wong in his hunger strike and will be standing in solidarity with the courageous participants of the Umbrella Revolution who are seeking democratic reforms in China. I encourage people all across the world, especially the faith community, to join with me in prayer for their efforts.

"For years, I have been an outspoken activist against the Chinese government's brutality against their own people as they crush human rights, religious freedom and speech. We can never be silent when we see tyranny and injustice against an innocent people by their own government.

"As I pray for the Hong Kong demonstrators and Chinese government, I will also be praying for the Obama Administration and our government. It is critical that the United States and the international community bring pressure on China to embrace democratic reforms in their country.

"It is absolutely critical that our brothers and sisters in Hong Kong who are risking everything for freedom know that we have not forgotten them in America."
