TULSA, Okla., Aug. 31 /Christian Newswire/ -- Oral Roberts University announced today that the school's fall 2009 undergraduate and graduate enrollment is up by 73 students from the fall of 2008. The total enrollment for fall 2009 is 3,140 students, representing 49 states and 56 countries. The number of new students increased from 766 in 2008 to 902 in 2009, which is more than a 17% increase.

"I am encouraged and energized by this increase, and believe it is a reflection of the renewed excitement on campus. I believe this is just the beginning of student growth at ORU. We will continue to engage new markets and recruit the best Christian students from around the world. ORU's best days are ahead and I am excited to be a part," said President Mark Rutland.

This increase in enrollment is the result of a number of factors including the new energy and excitement on campus. With the arrival of Dr. Mark Rutland, ORU's new president, and $10 million in renovations all over campus this summer, students, faculty and staff are optimistic about ORU's future.

The rise in enrollment is also a product of increased efforts in recruitment and retention as well as the introduction of the Whole Person Scholarship Competition. As a result of the 2009 competition, 31 students were awarded full-tuition scholarships ($18,476) and over 450 students were awarded partial scholarships.

The Whole Person Scholarship Competition program is funded by generous donors and is awarded to students who exhibit a Christian worldview, lifestyle of service, academic achievement, leadership ability, a vision to make a life-changing impact on others and a healthy lifestyle. These characteristics go along with the mission of the university: to produce students who are spiritually alive, intellectually alert, physically disciplined, socially adept and professionally competent. ORU is accepting nominations for this scholarship for students entering in the fall of 2010. Nominate a student or donate to the program at www.oru.edu/whole_person.
