WAKE FOREST, NC, May 26, 2012 /Christian Newswire/ -- More than 1,200 people are expected to gather this Monday in Wake Forest for the Old-Fashioned Memorial Day Picnic, the largest picnic honoring America's veterans held in North Carolina. Hosted by Hope Baptist Church, the all-day outdoor event will feature patriotic speeches, live music, a free barbecue lunch, rides in vintage military vehicles, a children's parade, a living history camp, and special remarks by two WWII veterans. The goal of the picnic extravaganza is to honor veterans who have served our country and give glory to God for His hand in preserving us a people.

"We owe a great debt to the sacrifice our veterans have made to oppose tyranny and defend our nation's cherished liberties," noted Scott T. Brown, who has organized the Memorial Day Picnic for more than twelve years, opening up his farm for the event's festivities. "God commands us to honor our fathers, and it's our privilege to do this in some small way at our annual picnic--to say 'thank you' to those brave soldiers who have stood in the breach for us."

The Memorial Day Picnic will be held on the Brown Family Farm--rain-or-shine--thanks to a large tent that will be erected for the occasion. Featured speakers will include Scott T. Brown and Dan Horn, both elders at Hope Baptist Church; P-51 Mustang pilot Bill Brown (father to Scott), who was shot down over Tokyo Bay during World War II; and "Colonel" Bill Henderson, who served with the Marine Corps and endured thirty-six days of brutal fighting during the Battle of Iwo Jima. Both Brown and Henderson's stories are featured in the WWII documentary, "The League Grateful Sons," which has been broadcast to millions worldwide on cable television.

"Freedom is not free, and many of our veterans have paid the ultimate price so that we might be free from the shackles of despotism that have plagued so many," Brown remarked. "Their sacrifice is, in a sense, a picture of the Gospel, as Jesus Christ gave his life to free us from the chains of sin. We will honor both these legacies when we gather together this Monday--the sacrifice of America's veterans and of our great God who cares for His own."

Special music will include performances by the Allen Sisters, who have delighted audiences with WWII favorites in far away places such as Normandy, France; and the Blue Gospel Trio, who are known for their old bluegrass standards and toe-tapping performances.

"While war is mixed with sadness, it is our joy to celebrate the legacy of peace that was secured because men did their duty to confront evil," stated Brown. "We have the luxury to enjoy events like Memorial Day in America because men hazarded their lives for us.

"We are privileged to welcome the community to join us on Monday for this special family event. Come ride jeeps with us--sing and feast with us--and let your children be blessed to meet and hear the stories of old veterans who are real heroes."

The Old-Fashioned Memorial Day Picnic will offer activities for both young and old, including a living history camp by the MacIntire brothers of "Soldiering through History," who will give onsite demonstrations of what life was like for a WWII soldier in combat; as well as a children's parade which will feature vintage military vehicles, classic cars, veterans in uniform, and children in period clothing representing various American wars.

Scott T. Brown is author and producer of Preparing Boys for Battle, Moment of Courage and It Can Be Done and appeared in the film, League of Grateful Sons.
