New Board Game 'Table Gype' Based on a Concept by G.K. Chesterton and H.G. Wells

MEDIA ADVISORY, March 2 /Christian Newswire/ -- In his Autobiography, G.K. Chesterton mentions creating the "well-known and widespread national game of Gype" with his friend, H.G. Wells, although the game has never been invented - until now. Over 70 years later, Uncle Chestnut's Table Gype has been produced by Eternal Revolution as a board game.

While Table Gype is reminiscent of classic abstract strategy games such as Chinese Checkers, it features several elements that make it stand out from other board games. It is played on a cloth mat, and the lines on the board are made to look like they were drawn with white chalk. The playing pieces are in fact dice, which get rolled whenever they are jumped - an effect that limits long-range strategic planning and gives the game a feeling of being a series of "inconvenient adventures."

The faces of the playing pieces, which Chesterton referred to as "mysterious and significant shapes," are all taken from Chesterton's writings, such as Fire, Swords, and a Tree. The most wildly moving piece is a Hat, and every die has the chance of becoming the dreaded Gype's Ear when rolled. Four of Chesterton's quotations regarding games and playing decorate the board, and several more quotes appear in the rule book.

"It is in no way the snooze fest that Chess is, while adding a dynamic that makes it stand head and shoulders above Chinese Checkers," wrote reviewer Larry Carter on BoardGameGeek.com.

Carter mentions in his review that it was the Chesterton quotes on the board that initially interested him in the game.

"I had never even heard of G.K. Chesterton before seeing this item," explained Carter. "But his quotes were witty and interesting. That in turn made Table Gype seem more to me than just some run of the mill abstract."

Eternal Revolution produces several items related to the English writer G.K. Chesterton, including a line of apparel featuring his quotes. Eternal Revolution also published a children's book on Chesterton, The Inconvenient Adventures of Uncle Chestnut, which introduces Chesterton to young readers as a fictional character in a modern American setting. Uncle Chestnut's author, Paul Edward Nowak, is also the lead designer of Table Gype.

Uncle Chestnut's Table Gype is available for purchase from Eternal-Revolution.com, and will soon be available from other online vendors.
