KIRKLAND, Wash., March 23, 2011 /Christian Newswire/ -- Christian musician Barry McGuire received an honorary doctoral degree from Northwest University on Friday, March 19, to recognize him for half a century of worldwide musical influence.

In the 1960s, Mr. McGuire sang with the New Christy Minstrels, starred in the musical Hair, and recorded Eve of Destruction, a protest song which reached the top of the Billboard and Cashbox charts. Upon his conversion in 1971, Mr. McGuire became one of the leaders of the music of the Jesus Movement. Since that time he has performed around the world spreading the message of Christ's love.

The Doctor of Humane Letters degree was conferred by Dr. James Heugel, the Provost (chief academic officer) of Northwest University in Kirkland, Wash. The presentation was made in association with the Creatio Institute of Northwest University, as part of a concert held at Lake Sammamish Foursquare Church in Bellevue, Wash.

Northwest University, founded in 1934, is located on a 56-acre campus in Kirkland, Wash. Northwest offers more than 60 bachelor's degree programs, nine master's degrees -- in ministry, management, education, and counseling -- and a doctoral degree in counseling psychology.
