Evangelical author has misgivings about manifesto.

MEDIA ADVISORY, May 12 /Christian Newswire/ -- While applauding the majority of "An Evangelical Manifesto," David Jeffers, author of "Understanding Evangelicals: A Guide to Jesusland," is hesitant to sign the manifesto because of its perceived distancing from America's Christian heritage.
Jeffers points out that on page 16 of the manifesto it repudiates "the partisans of a sacred public square" who "would continue to give a preferred place in public life to one religion which in almost all most current cases would be the Christian faith." Additionally the Jesusland author is confused by the statement "no one faith should be normative for the entire society."
Jeffers wonders if the signers of the manifesto consider the Ten Commandments as the normative foundation for our American legal system. The Jesusland author also questions whether the manifesto signers would repudiate John Jay, whom they refer to, who stated, "Providence has given to our people the choice of their rulers, and it is the duty, as well as the privilege and interest of our Christian nation, to select and prefer Christians for their rulers."
Jeffers also brings attention to the Richard Mouw interview where he made reference to "a theocratic impulse of attempting to reclaim America as a Christian nation." The Jesusland author is curious to know if Dr. Mouw would take issue with the following quote from Francis Scott Key while describing a patriot, "He will therefore seek to establish for his country in the eyes of the world, such a character as shall make her not unworthy of the name of a Christian nation..."
It is Jeffers' prayer that the attention of this manifesto will bring to the forefront the historical truth that this nation was founded on biblical principles and that it was founded as, in the words of Benjamin Franklin Morris, "a Christian nation, first in name, and secondly because of the many and mighty elements of pure Christianity which have given it character and helped shaped its destiny from the beginning."
