Public Agrees that Clunkers Should Not be Destroyed

MEDIA ADVISORY, Aug. 21 /Christian Newswire/ -- Mission Solano, a homeless mission in northern California, today released the results of a poll showing that 62% of the public disapproves of the destruction of automobiles as part of the Cash for Clunkers program.

"Again we are calling on the President and leaders of Congress to provide clemency for so-called clunkers that are to be destroyed," said Ron Marlette, Mission Solano Executive Director. "And now we can show that the public agrees."

In a survey conducted August 16-17, 62% of all respondents, 883 people, believe that Cash for Clunkers cars should be made available to those who can not afford a new car rather than being destroyed as is required by the Cash for Clunkers program.

Across the country, thousands of usable vehicles are lined up at what have been dubbed "automobile death rows" awaiting their mandated destruction. In the past many of these cars would have been donated to charitable used car lots like that operated by Mission Solano. "We appreciate the economic stimulus that has come to our community through the Cash for Clunkers program," said Marlette. "But this program will destroy cars that could be used by our clients."

The Cash for Clunkers program provides a government incentive of up to $4,500 for buyers who trade in late model cars (no more than 25 years old) when buying a new vehicle. Mission Solano sells used cars to provide funds for their programs to benefit the homeless and needy. Mission Solano also provides automobiles free of charge to graduates of its programs. Marlette noted, "Not everybody is able to purchase a new car. It is a shame to throw away so many usable vehicles."
