A Penny for Your Love

PHOENIX, August 8 /Christian Newswire/ -- The importance of expressing love between the generations is pivotal in securing young children. "Grandma loves you . . ." are words that carry a universal message of love and tenderness. Memories of fragrant cookies baking, the soft comfort of grandma's hand on a little one's shoulder, the love in grandma's eyes whenever she looks at her grandchild all communicate love and caring.

Lisa Soares Hale has written a children's picture book that illustrates the love of a grandmother for her granddaughter, proven one penny at a time. In Penny Love a little pre-school girl finds a penny and her grandmother says, "Whenever you find a penny, you will know that Grandma loves you." The little girl placed the penny in a jar she labeled in a child's handwriting "Penny Love." As she grew, the little girl found pennies at the beach, at the ice cream parlor, at the theater and added them to her collection of warm, brown pennies. On her wedding day she discovered a penny among the rice thrown by the guests, and ran over to tell her grandmother, "I love you, too, Grandma." Pennies overflowed the penny jar as she began her new life, secure and loved.

In Hale's read-to-me picture book, the tradition is passed on as the young woman herself becomes a grandmother and says to her granddaughter: "Whenever you find a penny, you will know that Grandma loves you." "Penny Love" gives us a glimpse of enduring love as the little girl, now a grandmother herself, finds a penny, looks up and whispers, "I love you too, Grandma."

Reinforcing the values of tender love, and the worth of the individual, "Penny Love" was written to capture the actual, cherished tradition Lisa Soares Hale's mother shares with her six granddaughters. The author, who spent her childhood in the Hawaiian Islands, now lives in Phoenix, Arizona with her husband and three daughters.
