Life or Death Healthcare Disputes: Legally Representing Elderly and Disabled Persons

Life Legal Defense Foundation Presents Legal Training on Life-Sustaining Care Conflicts

Contact: Tom Ciesielka, 312-422-1333, tc@tcpr.net

SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 4, 2013 /Christian Newswire/ -- On Friday, January 11, the Life Legal Defense Foundation (LLDF) will host the seminar, "Active Killing: What the Law Allows," a California approved CLE (Continuing Legal Education) program. The goal of this course is to prepare attorneys for the legal issues that arise out of disputes over the provision of life-sustaining care to elderly and disabled individuals.

"From Dr. Kevorkian to Terri Schiavo, the past several decades have seen a proliferation of conflicts regarding life-sustaining care," said Dana Cody, Executive Director of the Life Legal Defense Foundation. "These controversies have been fueled by conflicting ideologies and cultural forces and the acceptance of the belief that hastening death is an acceptable form of 'treatment'."

The "Active Killing" training will provide attorneys with both the philosophical backing for a pro-life approach to medical decision making as well as the practical resources on how to litigate these cases.

"Active Killing: What the Law Allows" will address the following topics:

  • Legalized Killing -- the philosophical underpinnings

  • Cultural Trends -- including assisted suicide and euthanasia

  • Legal Strategies and Tactics -- from interviewing the client and drafting the pleadings to litigation and appeal

As an organization, LLDF has been involved in litigation and funding for many "active killing" cases, including the Wendland case in California and the Schiavo case in Florida. Through these cases, LLDF has gained a unique perspective and insight into how to effectively protect life in these difficult settings. This training is designed to impart this insight to pro-life attorneys. It is being provided free of charge in the hope of preparing more attorneys to handle these essential cases. Donations to LLDF will be accepted to help with costs.
