Main Radio Lumière Station Up and Running, Pain and Fear Still Strong
Contact: Tim Rickel, World Gospel Mission, 765-671-7283

MEDIA ADVISORY, Jan. 18 /Christian Newswire/ -- World Gospel Mission staff member Paul Shingledecker arrived in Haiti on January 17 and began a survey of Radio Lumière's main station. After going over the entire building, he found very little indication of damage. However, due to numerous strong aftershocks and fears that the building could collapse, all radio programming and production is being done outdoors.

"No one will go back into the building except for a few seconds to get something. The operators and news people don't want to work in the studios. There is a huge sense of fear here," Shingledecker reported in an e-mail. Shingledecker is doing what he can to encourage the traumatized staff.

Although Radio Lumière is able to broadcast via radiowaves, it is still unable to stream content over the internet at its website. Shingledecker hopes to get streaming capabilities operational soon.

Next door to Radio Lumière, the Cote Plage church sustained some damage, and worship services were held on Sunday in an open field behind the studio.

"During the worship service, the Christians put their hands in the air and thanked the Lord they were alive--many of their friends and family are not. The pastor had them put their hands in the air and then stamp their feet, just because they still had hands and feet and could!" said Shingledecker.

Other stories are emerging of people coming to Jesus Christ during this unimaginable tragedy. One family known to Shingledecker is leading prayer in the open-air tent city they are living in, and three people have been saved through that spontaneous ministry.

"What a testimony to what God is able to do and is doing in Haiti," said Shingledecker, who had served as a missionary in Haiti for 23 years.
