News Conference Details ---
When: Sunday, January 22, 12:00 P.M., noon
Where: On the public sidewalk in front of the United States Supreme Court.
Why: To announce a grass roots campaign that will focus on one of the six states in America with just one abortion clinic and the effort to have the first abortion free state. "The First State Initiative" will move away from a federal approach toward ending abortion and focus on a local solution where the pro-life movement has always had its greatest strength.
Rev. Patrick J. Mahoney, Director of the Christian Defense Coalition, based in Washington, D.C., states,
"For 39 years, the principal way the pro-life community has worked to end abortion in America has been to attempt to overturn Roe v. Wade. Although there have been some significant gains made in the Supreme Court and through federal legislation, the tragic taking of innocent life and crushing of human rights continues.
"'The First State Initiative' will move away from the federal approach toward ending abortion and focus on a local solution where our movement has always had its greatest strength.
"By focusing on one of the six states that only has one abortion clinic, we can empower the grass root pro-life movement to end abortion in their state. After we have the first state, we move on to the next. In this way, we can chip away at Roe v. Wade until it longer has any impact."
Troy Newman, President of Operation Rescue, adds,
"As we endeavor to end abortion in America, we have seen cities become abortion-free and then regions abortion free. 'The First State Initiative' will employ a number of resources to make the first abortion-free state which is part of the path to an abortion-free America.
"In the interest of seeing an abortion-free America, for the first time ever a centralized database has been created listed every abortion center in the United States. We have built a good foundation in compiling the most accurate and up-to-date list of abortion clinics known to exist.
"AbortionDocs.org is a work in progress that will be maintained on a daily basis to ensure that the most accurate information is being presented.
"Our hope and prayer is that by the 40th Memorial of Roe v. Wade, we will have America's first abortion free state."
